How To Use Moves You Already Know to Do Advanced Techniques

We’ve just launched the latest Grapplearts BJJ instructional mobile app with my friend Brandon ‘Wolverine’ Mullins.

It’s called Advanced BJJ Fundamentals.

The name of this app isn’t accidental, because it’s all about using the fundamental building blocks of jiu-jitsu to make learning easier, to amplify the effectiveness and reliability of your techniques, and to build an advanced game.

You see, if you break down Jiu-jitsu into its fundamental components, then you really just see a few fundamental movements being used again and again.  These movements are the building blocks that underly all of jiu-jitsu, and most ‘new’ techniques are really just putting these relatively basic building blocks together in a new way.

Even the craziest, most advanced techniques are built from certain fundamental movements that you probably already know.

It’s NOT a question of re-inventing your jiu-jitsu again and again for each new move you learn – instead it’s all about being able to hone in on the underlying movement patterns.

The ‘Advanced BJJ Fundamentals‘ app for Apple, Android and Kindle devices breaks this all down for you so that your game will instantly improve with this information.

In the app world BJJ champion Brandon ‘Wolverine’ Mullins Brandon breaks these movements down for you (including how you can drill them on your own) and then shows you how those very same movements can be used again and again in ever-more advanced applications.

This app will build a super-strong foundation for the next ten years of your jiu-jitsu training.

Here are some previews from the app.  You’ll notice how in each technique Brandon references the fundamental movements that he’s already broken down for you earlier in the instructional…

Preview 1: A High Percentage Triangle Choke from Half Guard

In this clip Brandon teaches his signature triangle choke attack from the half guard position.  Note how he teaches this technique as a series of shrimping and bridging movements, which are fundamental BJJ building blocks used in almost every single submission, guard sweep and escape technique.

Preview 2: How to Use Technique, Not Strength, to Prevent the Guard Pass

The core movement in this guard pass prevention technique is the sideways roll.  It may look fancy, but in Advanced BJJ Fundamentals Brandon breaks this movement down and shows you almost anybody can learn to do this smoothly and safely.

Preview 3: Rolling Judo Entry for the Bow and Arrow Choke

The bow and arrow choke is one of the highest percentage finishes in BJJ competition.  In this clip you’re not only going to learn how to do this choke, but also a really cool entry that Brandon has used many times in competition (check out the tournament footage at the end of the clip).

Preview 4: Escaping the Turtle and Getting Back to Guard

Being in turtle is usually better than being pinned, but it still sucks.  Your opponent can rest all his weight on you and attack you with chokes, joint locks and turnovers.  Here’s how to use a variation of the technical standup fundamental motion to escape the turtle and get safely back to your guard.
