Ah, athletic tape… The quiet hero of Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu athletes worldwide. It plays a similar role in the grappler’s life as duct tape plays for the blue collar workers – it’s a quick fix for a lot of problems!
As a coach to many athletes, John Danaher understands the importance of tape:
When it’s competition time and everyone’s body is sore every day… And every session seems to create a new issue; jammed fingers, skin abrasions, twisted ankles and wrists….
When the pain is bothersome but not enough to stop you – that’s when the tape comes out.
He encourages all athletes to carry athletic tape with them at all times:
If there is one thing I encourage you all to carry with you at all times it’s athletic tape. It has done more to keep grapplers on the mats than all the physical therapists, acupuncturists, mobility trainers and other rehabilitation experts combined.
Make sure your study the basics of taping and wrapping your small joints up so you can stay active.
Like anything, there is a skill to it. Learn the different ways to wrap fingers, toes, wrists and ankles, cover a skin abrasion. It’s not difficult to learn and is a skill you’ll be using often and as long as you’re doing Jiu-Jitsu.
