Closed Guard to Shin Shield to Technical Standup

Getting back up to your feet against pressure is a critical skill in BJJ.

Most fundamentally you use this standup motion to get back to your feet should you find yourself on the bottom in a real fight, but you can also use this exact same movement to finish sweeps, escape bad positions, and counter your opponent’s attacks.

So it’s a movement that you need to know inside out and backwards!

Here’s a way to get back to your feet from the closed guard using a variation of the shin shield to create space.

This segment was designed to teach the mechanics of getting up and away, rather than using the shin shield as a place to hang out.  If you were going to stay in the shin shield position for any length of time then you would want your knee to be higher, against the chest, but if your opponent is leaning forward then you have much more room to slide the shin in at the hip

This technique is one of the very first moves that BJJ black belt Elliott Bayev teaches in our instructional on using the guard to survive and win a real fight called The Self Defense Guard.
