Can Training Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu Get You Ripped?

Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu is an outstanding martial art. You become healthier, happier, you get to meet amazing people and form friendships, as well as to get rid of stress through training… But, can BJJ also make you ripped? Can it turn you into a person with 6-pack abs?

Well, the answer is “no”. Here’s why.

CAN BJJ GET YOU RIPPED?

If you haven’t trained anything before and don’t have a lot of healthy lifestyle habits, then yes – you’ll start losing weight because of Jiu-Jitsu. Drilling and (especially) rolling will burn a lot of calories, so you’ll start seeing those pounds/kilograms dropping down and your waist becoming thinner in no time.

However, after a while, this progress will stop to a halt. And the reason is that you need to clean up your diet to become ripped. You’ll have to continue burning more calories than you take in, and that (after some time) will only be achievable if you improve your diet.
With that said, if you also want to add muscle, you’ll need to start doing some bodyweight and/or weight exercises. Jiu-Jitsu won’t have you packing on muscle in and of itself.

Nick “Chewy” Albin shares why you’ll need to clean up your diet and start going to the gym if you want to get ripped:
