Butterfly Guard to X Guard Standup Sweep

There’s one particular guard sweep that I’ve hit more times than than any other in the last 10 years.

When I start setting up this technique I always feel happy and confident because I know the odds of finishing it are very high.

What’s the name of this technique?

It’s the X guard standup sweep starting from butterfly guard, and it’s one of the most powerful sweeping moves in jiu-jitsu.

This move works in both gi and no gi.  And if you master this sequence then with very little work you can modify it to set up a variety of leglocks including heel hooks, ankle locks and kneebars.

Let’s break this super-powerful guard sweeping series down for you using both video and pictures (the picture sequence comes from the Nonstop Jiu-Jitsu book that’s now available on Amazon.)

If you want an effective open guard then you absolutely, positively need to check out this sequence!

Now let’s look at the same technique broken down using text and pictures…

Step 1: Begin in butterfly guard with your right hand in your opponent’s right collar and your left hand griping the opponent’s pants at the knee.  Your left foot is tucked in.

Step 2: Pull yourself forward and attempt to push your opponent backwards for a sweep (as covered in the Your First Attack from Butterfly Guard article).

Step 3: When your opponent pushes back into you, sit down

Step 4: Put both hooks (feet) inside the opponent’s legs.

Step 5: Scoot underneath your opponent and pull him onto you.

Step 6: Keep pulling your opponent onto you and lift him with both your legs.

Step 7: Kick your left leg straight so that it goes all the way through his legs.

Step 8: Pull your left knee to your chest, pull his knee with your  left hand, and push him to your right with your right hand on his collar.

Step 9: Keep pushing with your right arm and use your left arm to scoop under his right leg at the ankle. Stiffarming him  and keeping your knees high and tight are critical steps because they prevent your opponent from turning in and facing you.

Step 10: Bring his left leg up onto your shoulder.  Keep the distance by stiff-arming him with your right arm.

Step 11: Use your left leg to make a hook under your opponent’s right leg. Your feet should be in an “X” configuration.

Step 12: Use your legs to push your opponent away and begin to stand up.

Step 13: Post your right hand and left foot on the mat.

Step 15: Posture up with your body to off-balance your opponent.

Step 16: Stand up to finish the sweep and prepare to pass the guard.

There you go, one of my very favorite jiu-jitsu sequences to drill and deploy on the mats!!

Enjoy!
