BJJ Advice: Fight Them With Your Legs

There generally isn’t such a thing as a “shortcut to success”. However, there are things that you could do to improve faster, no matter the area of your life – and it’s the same thing with Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu.

For example, one of the surefire ways to become better at a faster rate in BJJ by is using your legs more.
Why? Coach John Danaher explains:

One of the most fundamental aspects of Jiu-Jitsu is its philosophy of always seeking to match your legs against your opponent’s arms whenever possible.

All the best positions and submissions in Jiu-Jitsu involve you connecting your legs to your opponent’s upper body to take advantage of the fact that the human body has a basic asymmetry between upper body strength and endurance versus lower body strength and endurance.

So, what should be your end goal? In short, it ought to be using your legs against the opponent’s upper body as much as possible:

If you can consistently match your lower body against an opponents upper body you’ll have a great advantage even when you’re smaller than your opponent.
Make it your mission to always lead with your legs and you’ll go far in this game!
