You know what Joe Rogan says about learning jiu-jitsu from the small guys. If you’re looking to beef up your collection of submissions that are about a little leverage and not a lot of strength, take the few minutes to learn these three finishes out of scarf position from one of those magical “small guys.”
Ray Lopez of NOLA MMA shows off the versatility of scarf hold if you set it up right. Cradling your opponent’s head and getting as wide a base as you can is essential. Once you’ve isolated their arm it’s as easy as twisting the wrist and stepping over with the right leg to apply the pressure for an armbar. If your opponent punches through, however, there are two wrist locks right there as well. And if you’re feeling footsie, you can extend the arm back out, step on their wrist, place your ankle over their wrist, then press down to pop their shoulder Americana style. You’ll barely break a sweat.
A little Technique Tuesday with the GOAT uke, Christopher Guzzardi AKA the Gizz. Wait for it…

(PS: Apparently the uke in this video is one of the greatest demo dummies of all time, and given how audible he is when hyperextended it’s hard to disagree.)
