The de la Riva guard is often thought of as primarily being a sweeping tool. But you can also land a lot of different submissions from de la Riva guard too! The main submissions include the triangle choke, omoplata, armbar and a few leglocks.
Here’s one of my very favorite de la Riva guard submissions demonstrated by Brandon ‘Wolverine’ Mullins. But before I go on I have to confess something…
I admit it: I’m totally biased. You see, in addition to being a BJJ black belt and a world champion, Brandon Mullins is also my friend.
So when he won the finals at the European Championships with this particular triangle choke I was particularly elated.
But despite our friendship I still thought that it was one of the coolest, slickest triangle choke setups I had ever seen.
Here’s the step-by-step breakdown of that exact triangle choke submission setup and finish. Plus the footage of it being pulled off in real life by Brandon. This is high-level jiu-jitsu between two advanced competitors at its very best, as well as world-class analysis and instruction by Brandon.
By the way, this clip about the Triangle Choke as a de la Riva Guard submission is an excerpt from our latest instructional app for phones and tablets.
The app is called ‘Non-Stop de la Riva Guard’ and it’s available for iPhone, iPad, Android and Kindle devices.
You’ll be getting a TON of information on this app, all centred around giving you an effective, easy-to-follow de la Riva guard gameplan that you can incorporate into your game as fast as possible.
