So you’re thinking of making a transition to mixed martial arts… Or perhaps you’re just wondering how you could use Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu in a “punching situation”, such as a street fight? Whatever the case may be, there are some thing that you’d need to adapt in your BJJ game to better-fit the narrative of a real fight.
For example, there are great ways that you can go about setting up the Triangle Choke. Here’s one, as demonstrated by Nick “Chewy” Albin.
TRIANGLE CHOKE SETUP FOR AN MMA OR STREET FIGHT
First things first: you need to protect yourself from getting punched while inside Closed Guard. To do so, break the opponent’s posture and trap their hand in an overhook. Also, keep their head close to your chest and your own head next to theirs. This will ensure maximum protection; and even more so once you angle out to the side.
With your one leg over their lower back and your other foot blocking their far-side hip, you can deliver punches. Or, you may immediately go for blocking their other hand by grabbing it at the wrist (while keeping your overhook on the first one).
Then, as they start trying to raise that second arm in order to punch you, you’ll slip your leg underneath it and start locking up a Triangle Choke.
Watch how to do that in more detail on the video below:
