Making your way around the Knee Shield can be tough… Especially when your opponent knows how to frame properly and has reasonable experience using it. However, using the Folding Pass is a really good way to negate the opponent’s Knee Shield; and then to pass to Side Control as well.
Kaynan Duarte explains and demonstrates how to use it.
FOLDING PASS VS. KNEE SHIELD
To initiate your Folding Pass setup, you’ll need to slide your arm underneath the opponent’s Knee Shield leg. Make sure that your hand blocks their hip on the bottom; as your arm, while underneath their leg, will make it tougher for them to move it freely. However, it won’t incapacitate their leg completely – to do that, you’ll need to place pressure on top of it with your shoulder and bodyweight.
Once you do that, get up on your tippy-toes and start sliding your knee across the opponent’s bottom shin (all the while keeping pressure on their top leg). Make sure to keep on blocking the opponent’s hip with your arm as you walk around them; until, eventually, you find an opening to insert your knee in front of their knee and establish Side Control.
Kaynan Duarte demonstrates the Folding Pass and explains it in more detail on the video below:
