BJJ Private Lessons or Group Classes… Which One’s Better?

Sooner or later on your BJJ journey, you’re going to come to a point where you’ll ask yourself the following question: “Should I take private lessons?” And it’s going to be a good question, since you’re looking to improve your Jiu-Jitsu as much as possible… So go for it! Feel free to supplement group classes with private lessons whenever you can.
However, if you had to choose between just taking private lessons and just taking group classes – which one should you pick?

Nick “Chewy” Albin shares his opinion.

BJJ PRIVATE LESSONS OR GROUP CLASSES?

Simply enough, if Chewy had to choose, he’d always go for the group classes. Why? Well, because by training in a group setting you’ll get used to rolling with different body types, as well as to the intensity that so many differently paced (and “styled”) rolls bring with them.
On the other hand, what if for whatever reason you cannot take group classes? Perhaps you’re injured and want to take it slow, or maybe you have a certain trauma due to which you don’t feel comfortable training in a group or a full-contact setting… If something like that’s the case, then feel free to go for the privates; as they’ll ensure progress as well.

Nevertheless, if you have an option and can go for the group class, do it – and use private lessons as a helping hand.
Chewy explains why you should do so in more detail below:
