So you’re thinking about training Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu, eh? That’s fantastic! But, are we hearing that correctly… You’re stalling and putting off your very first class?
We get it. You’re nervous and you want to get in shape first. But hear us out: that isn’t the right decision. You can’t get into shape for Jiu-Jitsu.
Here’s why.
YOU CAN’T GET IN SHAPE BEFORE JIU-JITSU
Here’s the thing. If you’re in zero shape at the moment, then sure – doing something before you start with BJJ will get you in some sort of shape. You’ll have a bit more cardio and you’ll feel better overall.
But other than that, there’s nothing that can prepare you for Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu. It’s a sport with specific movements; and until you get ahold of those movements, you’re going to be gassing out. No matter if you’re a couch potato or if you’re a professional athlete in some other sport.
You’ll have to learn how to manage your energy, how to breathe properly, and you’ll have to acquire that baseline cardio ability.
There’s just no way getting around it. You’ll have to train BJJ in order to get in shape for BJJ.
Nick “Chewy” Albin explains why this is the case – as well as why this is so great – on the video below:
