PSA: Don’t Use BJJ As An “Escape” From Life’s Problems

Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu is an amazing martial art. For, it’s not just that you’re getting healthier, fitter, more confident and happier… But you’re also strengthening your character and becoming more resilient to whatever life brings.
However, even with all this in mind, you still shouldn’t use BJJ as a form of escape from life’s problems. Which is all too easy to do – Nick “Chewy” Albin explains why that’s the case.

DON’T USE BJJ AS AN ESCAPE FROM LIFE’S PROBLEMS

Jiu-Jitsu is a great tool for numbing the emotional pain. You can go into training, sweat your heart out, and let those “feel good hormones” take over for a while.
However, if you come to rely on BJJ as a problem-solving instrument, you’ll run into two additional issues. The first one is that you won’t actually solve any of your problems through training… You’ll just get into a better mindset for solving them; but to actually push through them successfully, you’ll need to do something about them. And training can often serve as a sort of a “mask” for an actual solution.

And secondly, you’re probably tempted to train a lot more when things aren’t going well in your life. But if you increase your training frequency in an uncontrollable manner, you’ll likely injure yourself. And, therefore, will not be able to train frequently at all.
Chewy explains more and gives examples on the video below:
