Not Satisfied with Ashi Garami? Turn It Into The “Classic Reap”

The Ashi Garami is often the very first Leg Lock position you’ll learn, as you get acquainted with the ways of the Straight Ankle Lock. But chances are that you’ll soon enough get bored from doing it – as you learn about the devastating power of Heel Hooks and about the many positions you can get them from.
But here’s the kicker. You can use the Ashi Garami position to transition to some really nasty Heel Hook variations too, such as the “Classic Reap”! Jacob Couch demonstrates.

CLASSIC REAP BY JACOB COUCH

To transition from Ashi Garami to this position, you’ll need to make changes to your feet positioning first. The foot that’s blocking their backside will transition to underneath their far-side leg; lifting it up so that you can position your other foot (the one which was on their hip) underneath it. Make sure that the “shoelace” of this foot is underneath the opponent’s far knee.
From here, you’ll extend your first leg in order to lock up a sort of a Figure-Four on the opponent. Make sure that you keep their knee bent at all times throughout the setup – because the closer their heel is to their backside, the easier time you’ll have tapping them out.

To get that tap, you won’t dig their heel in your elbow as you’d normally do in a Heel Hook. Rather, you’ll use your forearm! Check out why, as well as many other details on this gnarly submission, below:
