Making the Armbar from Guard Harder to Escape

How many times have you gone for an armbar from the guard only to have your opponent escape your attack, pass your guard, and then smash you from a dominant position?

This is an incredibly common scenario, but it really doesn’t need to happen nearly as often!

The truth is that by making some simple tweaks to your technique and the sequence in which you apply that technique you’ll make the armbar 10 times harder to escape and protect yourself from any possible retribution by your opponent.

Some key points to maintain your own alignment and break your opponent’s alignment during the attack include…

  • Disrupt your opponent’s alignment by moving him around with a sweep attempt before going for the armbar
  • Base off of your opponent, generate force, and stop him from stacking you
  • Break your opponent’s posture using your calf on the back of his head
  • Control his wrist to access the end of his arm as a lever
  • Take the slack out of the system and then use a small bridge to apply the lock

This video from The Submission Formula does an amazing job of giving you the tricks and tips of a successful armbar from guard.
