Are you a BJJ athlete who loves going for chokes all the time? Be it a Guillotine Choke, a Rear Naked Choke, a Triangle, or whichever other variation it may be – you’re someone who is refining the art of neck-based-submissions.
However, it’s safe to say that sometimes you’re not really sure if your submission was a choke or a crank. Sure, your training partners tap out, but was it because you blocked the blood from going into their brain… Or because you were cranking their neck and head?
Nick “Chewy” Albin shares two pieces of advice on how to tell if your submission is a choke or a crank.
IS IT A CHOKE OR A CRANK?
The first piece of advice that Chewy shares is to ask your training partners. When you’re applying the choke and you notice that they aren’t tapping out, loosen up the submission for a bit and ask them: “Am I choking you or is it more of a crank?”
Then, when they tell you the answer, remember what it feels like. No, not the answer; but how the submission feels like if the training partner told you it was a crank.
You’ll need to integrate this feeling into your muscle memory, in order to be able to recognize it the very next time you’re applying the same submission. That way, you’ll notice if the choke hold isn’t quite right.
Chewy explains in more detail on the video below:
