Even if you’re not aware of them, there are some habits that you engage in while training and competing… That are hindering your improvement and success in Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu.
Getting rid of these invisible habits is of huge importance. However, it’s easier said than done, as Brian Glick emphasizes so well:
These are patterns or responses you don’t know you’re engaging in, and often they require another person (training partner, your instructor) to point them out.
Retraining old habits is hard because they are deeply ingrained – you’ve been doing them for a long time, sometimes for years.
You won’t be able to just “decide” you’d like to change them and see results in a day or two. In some cases it can take weeks, even months.
Nevertheless, becoming increasingly aware of these invisible habits is going to be of huge importance in the long run:
If you don’t know you’re doing something, you cannot retrain it and it will keep happening without you being able to do anything about it.
Begin by seeing this habit in place and watch how it affects you. After that, developing an alternative is much easier.
