If you’re a smaller BJJ student, it’s often easy to get discouraged. Your training partners are bigger (and, therefore, oftentimes stronger) than you are and are using that to their full advantage… In other words: you’re getting manhandled. And it is getting to you.
So, how are you supposed to keep your motivation for training and if you’re getting crushed all the time? Professor Ryan Young, from Kama Jiu-Jitsu, has a couple of great tips.
KEEPING YOUR MOTIVATION FOR BJJ WHEN GETTING MANHANDLED
The first thing you ought to do is accept that you’re the smaller individual in training. However, you shouldn’t stop with that. Namely, Professor Young emphasizes that it’s crucial that you shift your perception as well.
From now on, you need to stop telling yourself that you’ve lost because your training partner was bigger or stronger than you. Instead, start understanding that they beat you simply because they’re better than you are.
By refocusing like this, you’re giving yourself much more power to improve. Which is, actually, the third important component: start paying attention to improving your technique and “true” Jiu-Jitsu as much as possible.
For, you may never become one of the biggest or strongest people in the gym. But you can certainly become part of the most technically advanced ones.
