If you are having trouble remembering all the BJJ techniques you’re being taught, these tips should help you out:
Keep a journal. Write up or type out what you learn after each class, or impress your instructor by taking notes IN class. Some people say that they do not like taking notes because they will never go back and read them. That is not the only reason to take them. The act of typing or writing causes the techniques to be more impacted into your mind.
Visualize. This happens on its own after a short amount of time. Visualization if recommended for any field of endeavor and is very helpful in BJJ. When you have quiet time or are about to go to bed. Think about what you learned in Jiu-Jitsu today. What were your successes and failures?
Draw a flow chart. BJJ can seem like a disorganized mess of techniques. Jiu-Jitsu is full of positions and situations that require different responses and reactions. Mapping out each position helps you to see how they connect to each other and what moves you know from one position to the next.
Drill, drill, drill. Nothing beats plain old drilling! If you are trying to remember a technique, simply do it over and over! Instead of making small talk before and after class, grab a training partner and put in those reps.
If you implement these tips, you will notice your BJJ game will quickly improve! Good luck!
