In this video excerpted from The Closed Guard System renowned BJJ black belt Jon Thomas covers the advanced details of the hip bump sweep.
The hip bump sweep is one of those classic attacks from the closed guard that still works incredibly well in the modern jiu-jitsu game.
00:10 – How to break your opponent’s posture in closed guard
00:40 – How to exploit him defending the posture break
01:02 – How to do the hip bump sweep
01:48 – Optimal timing for the hip bump sweep
03:01 – Hip bump sweep to triangle choke
04:32 – Countering the forward drive
04:55 – Kimura vs forward drive
05:05 – Capturing the overhook vs forward drive
06:20 – Broader concepts and ideas for linking techniques
Personally I really like how Jon teaches the how, when, and what if’s of every technique.
These aspects are critical regardless of whether you’re learning the hip bump sweep from closed guard or any other move from any other position.
When you’re learning how to do a technique you obviously need to learn the steps for HOW to do it (i.e. first do this, then do that…).
And then come the WHAT IF’s. What if they other guy counters by doing this? What if he tries to shut you down by doing that? How can you follow up if your initial move didn’t work?
You’ll get great examples of the how, when, and what if’s in the video above even though it’s only 7:52 long.
Take this approach. Use it in the closed guard. And then expand it to every other position in your game.

A High Percentage Triangle Choke Setup from Open Guard
Jon Thomas shows you a high percentage triangle choke attack from open guard.
This is a GREAT example of first using a strong offbalancing movement to totally take your opponent out of alignment before slamming on the actual submission itself.
