In this video excerpted from The Closed Guard System renowned BJJ black belt Jon Thomas covers the advanced details of the hip bump sweep.

The hip bump sweep is one of those classic attacks from the closed guard that still works incredibly well in the modern jiu-jitsu game.

“You can’t take what you want, you HAVE to take what they give you.” – Jon Thomas

Personally I really like how Jon teaches the how, when, and what if’s of every technique.

These aspects are critical regardless of whether you’re learning the hip bump sweep from closed guard or any other move from any other position.

When you’re learning how to do a technique you obviously need to learn the steps for HOW to do it (i.e. first do this, then do that…).

“The really big thing in jiu-jitsu is not knowing the techniques, it’s knowing WHEN to do the techniques” – Jon Thomas
But learning WHEN to use your technique is even more important.  What are the cues, the triggers, and the right times to use that attack?

And then come the WHAT IF’s.  What if they other guy counters by doing this?  What if he tries to shut you down by doing that? How can you follow up if your initial move didn’t work?

You’ll get great examples of the how, when, and what if’s in the video above even though it’s only 7:52 long.

Take this approach. Use it in the closed guard.  And then expand it to every other position in your game.
