Getting to the top is extremely difficult, but staying there is even tougher… And, in the world of no-gi BJJ, Gordon Ryan understands that fact best.
In his words, winning can actually be easy – but only in the beginning:
Winning ADCC is easy. Winning Worlds is easy. Being the best in the world… It’s easy.
It’s easy to compete for a decade and win once. It’s easy to win on your debut when you have the element of surprise.
But, winning when everyone is watching you and expects you to win again, to dominate, that isn’t easy:
Try winning when everyone’s watching you, when there’s a target on your back, when everyone knows you’re the best.
Try winning for years after you release your entire game to the public via instructional videos. And try being the best in the world for years upon years. THAT is not easy.To say I’m the best in the world is disrespectful at this point.
Win a major title and you can call yourself the best in the world, but to be able to call yourself the best ever… That’s not for everyone, and I’m the best no-gi submission grappler, ever.
