Do You Even Omoplata, Bro? If Not, You’re Missing Out On A Lot

The Omoplata… Is rarely anyone’s first submission of choice. Especially when it comes to up-and-coming lower belts; to them, it seems much more practical to opt for another submission, like a Kimura, a Rear Naked Choke, or something else. And that is completely fine! However, if you truly want to expand your (Open Guard) BJJ game, then you should start playing more with the Omoplata.

Jon Thomas explains why.

START PLAYING THE OMOPLATA GAME

First of all – and even though it may not seem like it – the Omoplata offers you a lot of opportunities to build on your offense. That is, if the opponent starts defending against it, you can always transition to some other attack.
For instance, if they start doing the classic forward roll escape, you can grab their elbow and pinch it below your calf muscle. From there, sit on their chest and either transition to a shoulder lock or grab their second arm, extend it, and get an Armbar finish. With that said, of course, you can always stop them from doing the forward roll by breaking their posture and extending their leg; dropping them down to the mats for an easier Omoplata finish.

And what if they somehow posture up? You have a lot of options. One of them is grabbing the pants of their leg, shrimping away with your far leg (with the Omoplata leg still in place), and breaking their posture down like that yet again.
Make sure to watch the video below for more information on the Omoplata; all through the basics of finishing it to the smaller details that will further improve your overall game.

Master the OMOPLATA–the submission that can be your new favorite position.

  • You might not look like Clark Gracie, but your omoplatas will be the best-looking part of your game.
  • SWEEP them when they’re defending the SUBMISSION and SUBMIT them when they’re defending the SWEEP.
