Chokes, it could be argued, are the king of submissions. When you lock in an Armbar, a Kimura, a Straight Ankle Lock, or even a Heel Hook… If the adrenaline is running high, your opponent can push through the pain – even through having their tendons or bones cracked. But when it comes to chokes, there are no tough guys. If applied properly, your opponent will go to sleep if they don’t tap out.
Such is the case with this Scarf Choke setup you’re about to learn. Professor Ricardo Marques demonstrates!
EASY AND EFFECTIVE SCARF CHOKE SETUP
To begin with this setup, you’re going to start from Side Control and you’ll loosen up your lapel. Then, Professor Marques shows that you’ll post your knee on the opponent’s belly – not all the way to the Knee on Belly position, but just a bit.
The reason? This will cause your opponent to react. They’ll post their hand on your knee, to try and prevent it from going any further and to defend… And that’s where you’ll feed your lapel to your underneath-their-head hand, initiating the Scarf Choke.
However, if they have any experience whatsoever, your opponent will defend by bringing back their arm between their neck and your lapel. In that case, you need to “punch” your hand between their arm and shoulder, grab your lapel (while the other hand is still holding it) – and then start tightening up the choke by completing your Scarf Choke turn.
