BJJ Advice: Just Do Something (Even If It’s Wrong)

Ever been stuck in a position or with a “problem” that you can’t solve in Jiu-Jitsu… Without doing anything about it?

How did it feel after the round ended? Not the best, right?
It’s almost as if you felt that the round was wasted. That you should’ve done something. Anything, but just thinking about doing it.

Well, that’s exactly what you should do when you face a problem in BJJ. Especially in training.
Brian Glick explains why that’s the case:

Whenever you’re bogged down by a particular problem in your training, one of the best ways to get unstuck is to start down a path – even if it’s the wrong one.

The corollary of this is not to wait but to do it AS SOON AS POSSIBLE.
Step by step is the only meaningful way out.

As you start moving you can’t help but improve, even if it’s slower than you might like.

The only truly “wrong” answer is to wait for the “right” answer:

The reason we get stuck on something is often because we’re waiting for exactly the right answer to show itself.

Sometimes you have to start without seeing the end – you might not end up with the perfect answer, but you’ll find yourself drifting incrementally towards the solution, even if you don’t know exactly what it is.
