It would be great if there were some shortcuts to becoming better in Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu, wouldn’t it? Yeah…
But, even though there are some things you could do to speed up your improvement rate (such as drilling with purpose and learning concepts and principles), the matter of the fact is that you will have to put in the work.
However, this work shouldn’t be something that you “just do”. Instead, you should have a plan on how to execute it.
Brian Glick, one of John Danaher’s most senior black belts, explains why having a sound plan is a much better strategy than looking for shortcuts:
Real “shortcuts” in Jiu-Jitsu are few and far between. Instead of spending your time looking for shortcuts, a better strategy is to spend your time crafting a plan.
A plan involves steps that are generally under your control. It includes the difficult, slogging work of trying, testing and failing, then having to consistently maintain whatever you find that works.
We may enjoy the feeling (and the credit) of the shortcut when we find one. But having a plan beats hacking for a shortcut any day.
