A Little-Known Move to Recover Guard from Turtle

When BJJ world champion Brandon Mullins and I started talking about doing a second instructional set, he was adamant about including a section focusing on the advanced applications of fundamental movements.

I was initially dubious.  I didn’t think that most people would be interested in this.  But the more we talked about it, and especially when he started showing me what he wanted to cover, I became a convert.

You see, there are movements people already know and use, but they just don’t know how to use them to their full potential.

This means that if they want to give their game a giant boost, they don’t need to learn new techniques.  They don’t have to cultivate new movements.  All they need to do is to learn new uses for the movements they already know.

Let’s get specific here…

Most people have seen the solo standup movement that is so important in BJJ self defense.  You know, the movement where you kick someone away to make room, and then come up to base by pulling your leg back underneath your body.

You probably learned that movement on day one.

But what you might not know is that this same movement can be used all the time in grappling.  It can be used to finish sweeps, to counter sweeps your opponent tries on you, or even to escape the turtle position.

Here’s a great example of what we’re talking about. In the short video below Brandon uses a little known variation of the technical standup movement to recover his guard when he’s trapped in the turtle position.

This is really useful stuff and you can put it to work for you right away!

The bottom line is that you already use these fundamental movements.  All you need is someone to connect the dots for you and then you’ll be off to the races.  It’s like a ‘buy one, get ten free’ situation.  Because when you learn how to do one of these movements properly then you don’t just get one technique out of it – it’s more like 10, 20, or 100 different techniques, all using the same movement.

If you liked this technique and want more, then check out the brand new instructional set called Non-Stop Jiu-Jitsu with Brandon Mullins and Stephan Kesting.

There are 9 hours of solid instruction in this set.  Volume 1 focuses on advanced applications of fundamental movements, Volumes 2, 3 and 4 focus on open guard sweeps and attacks, as well as high level guard passing strategies.

In this set you’ll learn some of the most powerful techniques and strategies for winning competitions and dominating your sparring partners.  These are the exact techniques being used by the very best competitors in the world, but you don’t need crazy flexibility or athleticism to pull them off.  Click here for more info.
