The ‘Butt Double” is a high percentage guard attack that’s also a low risk way of guaging the distance, feeling out your opponent and setting up other attacks.
It’s called the “Butt Double” because a) you start sitting on your butt and b) you come up forward like you would in a double leg takdedown.
You can use it anytime your opponent is backing up or drawing back from you in the open guard. And it also works in no gi so long as you use a collar tie to control the head and neck of your opponent.
This is such an important move that I want to break it down for you in two different ways…
First, here’s a video showing you exactly how to add this technique to your arsenal. There’s some cool footage of Brandon Mullins using it in no gi competition at the 6:40 mark…
And here’s the same technique in step by step picture format from the bestselling Nonstop Jiu-Jitsu book that I co-wrote with Brandon Mullins…
Step 1: Begin in butterfly guard, sitting on your butt, with your right hand on your opponent’s right collar. In no gi use a collar tie grip instead. Your opponent is in an upright posture.
Step 2: Use your left hand to grab your opponent’s pants at his right knee. In no gi grip behind the knee or check his leg outside his knee.
Step 3: Use your right hand to puch him backwards and tuck your own left foot to the inside.
Step 4: Lean forward and pul yourself up to your let knee as you continue to push him backwards.
Step 5: Keep pushing him with your right hand and pulling him with your left hand.
Step 6: Come to the top to finish the sweep.
Brandon Mullins, my coauthor in Nonstop Jiu-Jitsu, has used this move successfully in both the No Gi World Championships and in the American Nationals with the gi, so you know it works!
Cheers,
Stephan
