What Should Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu White Belts Focus On To Improve?

When starting out in Brazilian jiu-jitsu as a white belt, one of the most important things to focus on is developing good fundamentals. This includes mastering basic techniques, positions, and movement.

Some key areas white belts should focus their training on include:

Grip fighting – Learning proper grips and how to break your opponent’s grips is essential in jiu-jitsu. Practice different overhook, underhook and collar grips and work on breaking and regaining grips during drilling and sparring.

Posture – Developing good posture is key for both offense and defense. Work on keeping your spine straight, shoulders square and hips aligned when drilling and rolling. Practice breaking your opponent’s posture to submit them.

Frames – Learning how to properly frame against your opponent using your arms and legs will allow you to create space and defend submissions. Frames are essential for escaping bad positions.

Hip movement and bridging – Developing explosive hip movement and the ability to bridge properly will allow you to escape bad positions and sweep your opponent. White belts should focus on learning the basic hip bridges and escapes.

Drilling techniques – Focus on drilling the basic techniques and positions over and over again. This includes guard passing, submissions from mount/side control and basic sweeps from guard. Repetition and muscle memory are key.

As you progress through the white belt level, continue to refine your fundamentals while slowly integrating more advanced techniques. A strong foundation built on proper fundamentals will set you up for success as you move up in jiu-jitsu.
