What are the Leg Lasso and Spider X Variations of Spider Guard?

We’ve been talking a lot about the instructional apps in the Spider Guard Masterclass series

And today we’re going to take a look at the third app in this series.  It’s called Spider Guard Masterclass Volume 3: Next Level Spider Guard, and it focuses on the Leg Lasso and Spider X variations of Spider Guard.

This app covers a LOT of the techniques used by the top competitors in the world when they deploy the Spider Guard!

In this third of five apps you’ll get a complete gameplan for the Leg Lasso and Spider X versions of the Spider Guard position. These are attacks and techniques from the cutting edge of Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu.

But what are these two variations?  The Leg Lasso and the Spider X?

Leg Lasso Spider Guard

White’s left leg is entangling blue’s right arm in the ‘leg lasso’ position

Well, they’re some of the hardest, most frustrating Spider Guard variations for your training partners and competition opponents to pass!

In the Leg Lasso you wrap your opponent’s arm with your leg.  Essentially your shin or ankle ends up forming a ‘hook’ across the inside of your opponent’s elbow area.

This hook on his arm (the ‘Lasso’) makes it very, very difficult for him to pass.

There are competitors who are really good at passing closed guard, half guard, butterfly guard, etc.  But I don’t know of any competitor who gets caught in the Leg Lasso and says to himself, “Yes, now I’ve got him!”

In fact passing here usually first requires the slow and difficult process of unravelling the Lasso, which is easier said than done if your opponent knows what he’s doing. And the entire time you’re in danger of getting swept and/or submitted.

Spider X Guard

White has blue in the ‘Spider X’ position

The other position that I wanted to talk about is the Spider X…

This is a super-powerful hybrid of the Spider Guard and the X Guard that you’re starting to see in high level competition more and more often these days.

On the one hand, the Spider Guard aspects of this position give you great control over your opponent’s arms, making it difficult for him to launch any offence.

And the X Guard aspects of it mean that you’ve inserted your body directly under his centre of gravity, and entangling his legs, making it very very difficult for him to avoid getting swept.

Plus you can still attack with the usual assortment of omoplatas, triangles and other Spider Guard submissions…

This is powerful knowledge to have at your fingertips, which is why I’m so excited about this app…

In it you’ll learn powerful and reliable entries, sweeps, submissions, and critical concepts, as well as the keys to easily transition into and out of these positions to keep your opponents guessing as to what’s coming next! They’ll never know what hit ‘em…

Also for each of these positions you’ll learn ways to frustrate your opponent’s guard pass attempts, as well as how to transition to other effective variations of Spider Guard. These guard pass prevention tips are worth the price of the app, because they’ll keep you from having your guard passed and getting pinned, even if your opponent is bigger and stronger than you.

You’ll get a complete game with options, strategies, techniques and advanced tips that will keep your opponents guessing for a long, long time.

And as always, crazy flexibility and athleticism are NOT required.

Volume 3 of Spider Guard Masterclass is simply the most detailed, comprehensive, and useful resource ever produced on the Leg Lasso and Spider X variations of the modern Spider Guard. And it’s available in the Grapplearts BJJ Master App.
