If you’re looking to be as complete of a fighter as you can be, or if you want to be truly proficient in self defense, then you can’t rely just on grappling. Rather, you should look to incorporate striking training and mix it with your grappling skillset; that way, you’ll be the most complete martial artist that your genetics will allow you to be.
Furthermore, if you’re looking to make a career in mixed martial arts, then this combination is a must. That showed to be true once more at the UFC Vegas 40, which featured heaps of submissions… One of them being Nate Landwehr’s Anaconda Choke finish.
In the 19 fights he has had so far, Landwehr mostly showcased his striking abilities. He’s known for his punching power, which he is fully aware of – this is what he had to say after the fight:
I still got power in these hands. I just wanted to show you all I could do it. Ain’t a man alive that can out push me. This is just the beginning.
Landwehr used his boxing and muay thai knowledge to the fullest in the two and a half rounds. Eventually, he forced his opponent to go for a takedown, which he successfully sprawled. Then, he locked in a Guillotine Choke and then transitioned to an Anaconda Choke… Getting his first career submission win, as well as a $50K bonus.
