The half guard is a move that can be a position of strength for both the bottom player and the top player. Some people use the half guard as their first choice in attacks and sweeps while others who end up in half guard on bottom are considered to be half passed.

As a top player, the half guard can mean that you’re almost passed and with the various ways in which people play the position, there are many ways to shut it down and pass.
