Here are some tips that will make starting your Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu journey a breeze.
Leave your ego at the door – Yes. You will definitely want to leave your ego at the door because it will not help you at all. In fact it may make you not liked by othersm which definitely isn’t going to be of use if you wish to be part of the team. Be open to learning. Don’t let a feeling of losing or not knowing something, put you off.
Warm-ups are exercises you are not used to – There will be jogging but then there will be shrimping, leg circles, break falls, forward/backward rolls, grip fighting, rolling over the shoulders, etc. Many of these warm ups might seem pointless at the time but eventually you will see their functionality.
Strength does not matter – Trying to muscle your way through BJJ is like trying to muscle your way out of quicksand. It is only going to make matters worse. Try to focus on learning techniques. Using strength to “win” is going to tire you out quickly!
It’s an up-close sport – Our is a close quarters game to say the least. It is wrestling essentially so get used to sweating on someone and being sweat on. It’s not a big deal but can definitely be off-putting, especially to women.
Respect your gi – Don’t come to class in a karate gi, or a tattered gi, or worst of all a smelly gi. Make sure that your gi is clean and free of smells.
Tapping is part of learning – This sort of goes back to not having an ego but deserves being mentioned on it’s own. Tapping is no big deal. As a beginner you will be doing it often. Don’t sweat it. Cool people like being tapped because they know they are learning. Other people learn to like it over time.
Promotions are not chased after – If you want to chase belts that’s fine. Just know that you will be chasing something for 10-15 years. That’s a long chase. It is better to enjoy what you are learning and the fun you are having. Those stripes and belts will come in their own time. You will make your own journey suck, and will want to quit if you are in it for belts.
Hope these tips help. Share with a friend who is starting BJJ or hide this wisdom for yourself! Either way have fun and keep rolling!
