These Breathing Tips Will Help You In Your Next BJJ Competition

If you’re looking to push yourself to your maximum in Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu, it’s often not enough to focus solely on techniques. Nor on your game plan… But, even more so, on some of the finer details. For example – breathing.
And not just on your, but also on your opponent’s breathing. Here’s why and how, as explained by Nick “Chewy” Albin.

BREATHING TIPS FOR BJJ PERFORMANCE

First of all, if you want to improve your performance in training, it’s vital that you start breathing through your nose. That is, the next time you roll, start by inhaling and exhaling through your nose in a relaxed manner; this will, among other things, make you more relaxed before the roll (and, therefore, before competition as well).
Then, when you notice yourself starting to exhale through your mouth, you can rest assured that it’s time to either slow the pace down or to focus more on your “breathing performance”.

Next, you also need to keep your focus on the opponent’s breathing. In other words: if you notice them taking big breaths (especially if they’re inhaling and exhaling through their mouth), and you can – meanwhile – stay composed with your own… Just keep doing what you’re doing and apply more pressure. You’ll get the tap soon enough.
