The Future is Here: A.I. Shows the Game Plan to Defeat Gordon Ryan in a Grappling Match

Defeating Gordon Ryan in a grappling match would be no easy feat. Ryan is arguably the most dominant grappler in the history of Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu and submission grappling. He is an ADCC champion, a four-time no-gi world champion, and an eight-time Eddie Bravo Invitational champion.

We asked A.I. To make a game plan to defeat Gordon Ryan in a grappling match and here is what they came up with:

“To have any chance against Ryan, you must be an elite grappler yourself with years of experience and training. Even then, Ryan’s combination of skills, athleticism, and fierce competitiveness make him nearly unbeatable. Here are some keys to potentially upsetting Ryan in a grappling match:

1) Have elite takedown skills. Ryan’s ground game is legendary, so you cannot allow him to pull guard and get to his world-class submission attacks from top or bottom. You must get the fight to the mat on your terms via powerful double legs, singles, or body locks.
2) Be strong and explosive. Ryan is an incredibly powerful athlete for his weight class. You will need to match or exceed his strength and explosiveness to stand any chance in the scrambles, clinch work, and takedown battles.

3) Have an elite guard game and submission threats from bottom. Even if you take Ryan down, he will likely work his way back up. You must be able to threaten with submissions, sweeps, and reversals from your guard to keep Ryan guessing and on the defensive.
4) Have incredible cardiovascular endurance. Ryan is known for applying relentless pressure and pace for the entire match. You must be able to keep up that pace for at least 15-20 minutes to survive and potentially outlast Ryan in the later rounds.

5) Have a competitive and confident mentality. Ryan feeds off his opponents’ doubts. You must truly believe you can win and stay poised and confident throughout to have any chance of upsetting the odds against Gordon Ryan.”

This is the question that BJJ black belt and AI specialist Lex Fridman asked Ryan’s instructor John Danaher.
