Technique Thursday: Olympic Level Wrestling

The double leg is one of the first takedowns that a person learns. It’s also one of the easiest to mess up on. In theory, the movement is fairly simple. In practice, it takes a bit of finesse. Because the takedown is a common one, it also carries with it some the most options for counter-wrestling. If you take this shot and end up trapped beneath someone, it can be devastating. That’s where today’s lesson comes into play.

In the following video, Sara McMann, Olympic silver-medalist and UFC bantamweight, demonstrates the effectiveness of the double leg. She also walks through numerous ways to work around an opponent’s counter-wrestling. The video has lots of background noise, but the techniques are invaluable. If you like to shoot in on a person, or if you want to start, check this video out.
