Whenever you’re playing Open Guard, it’s often thought that you should, well, remain there. That you should remain on the mats and engage your opponents from that spot. However, the reality is that you can also stand up in one way or another, and take on the opponent like that as well.
Of course, you’ve got to be on a lookout for a good opportunity to do so. Here’s one example on how to go about it; Paul Schreiner demonstrates an unexpected Single Leg takedown setup from Open Guard.
SINGLE LEG SETUP FROM OPEN GUARD
If you want to set up a Single Leg takedown from this position, then first you’ve got to make your opponent react in a favorable way. Schreiner explains that you’ll do this by first establishing your 2-on-1 grips; the first one being the Pistol Grip and the second one grabbing the sleeve material behind the opponent’s tricep muscle.
Now, it’s vital that you don’t force the takedown from here. Rather, if the opponent stays hunched back, then you could go ahead and set up other things (such as a simple Arm Drag). However, if they decide to posture up – as a lot of people will – then you’ve got yourself a Single Leg opening.
As they post up, you’ll scoot yourself to their leg and wrap around it. Don’t do this head-on, but approach their leg from an outside angle; otherwise, the opponent will just press you down to the mats with their knee.
From here, use a technical standup to get up and to take them down.

- The Pistol Grip 2-on1 is a unique control that can be used to completely shut-down an opponent’s passing attempts while leaving them vulnerable to sweeps, back takes, and submissions.
- Develop a sophisticated web of attacks that all start with obtaining the pistol grip 2-on-1.
