Realities of Using Jiu-Jitsu in a Street Altercation: You Could Get Jumped

Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu is a fantastic martial art and its use in potential self-defense scenarios is clear. However, it’s not an end-all-be-all cure. Rather, being aware of your surroundings goes a long way, especially in a street fight; and it could save you from serious injury, as well as your life.

One such example comes from a video that was published on one of Reddit’s subforums. The video shows a guy in yellow shorts who obviously trains Jiu-Jitsu fighting against an another guy who may or may not have fighting experience.
The BJJ guy does all the right things: he controls his opponent in Mount, goes for Side Control when necessary, and even takes the other guy’s back at one point… But there’s one very serious thing that he isn’t taking into consideration: what’s happening around him!

Around him, there are multiple people who go out of their way to punch him and stomp on him during the whole fight. Once you watch the video, you’ll understand just how big of a miracle it is that the yellow shorts guy (seemingly) pushed through without any serious injuries. He could’ve easily been very seriously injured in the entire ordeal.
Therefore, the message is obvious. If there are multiple people around you in a street fight, do not go down on the floor. That’s simply too much of a risk.
