Reaction vs. Response: A Huge Difference In Jiu-Jitsu

Did you know that there’s a huge difference between reaction and response… Especially when it comes to Jiu-Jitsu?

Yes, that’s right. Brian Glick explains:

Factors like speed, power, connection and pressure allow you to set your agenda in training.
The trouble is that they also allow your partner to set THEIR agenda.

When we find ourselves behind, we can either REACT to what is going on or we can RESPOND to what’s going on.

That is to say, responses are a better option:

Our reactions are shortcuts, learned habits out of our control that may not suit the situation we face.
Responses are different: they’re actions that work on purpose to produce the outcome we seek.

So, if you want to become the best that you can be in Jiu-Jitsu, you better start prioritizing responses over reactions:

When we think through our choices and select the best option, we have an opportunity to proactively shift how things are going for us.

It’s rarely the easy choice – it takes more focus and preparation, less excuse-making and blaming – but it’s the one experts make (and often part of what makes them experts).
