Doping in Jiu-Jitsu has become such a big issue. Recently, six Brazilian athletes were suspended by USADA (US Anti-Doping Agency) after being caught in tests carried out at the IBJJF Worlds Gi and No Gi in 2022.
Dedé Pederneiras, leader of MMA and BJJ team Nova União and one of the best MMA coaches in the world, recently joined the podcast “Pura Conection” to discuss the evolution of other countries in MMA.
He mentioned the lack of incentives and sponsorships as some determining factors. He also went further to discuss doping and how some fighters are “knowing how to use” it without getting caught.
“If you watch UFC before USADA and after, what will you see? In the past, everyone took it, Brazilians, Americans, Russians… So, you had a much higher level of Brazilian champions than you have today.
It can no longer be done, but who else benefited from it? Who knows how to use doping and not get caught. Those who don’t know, get caught, or have to not take anything”, declared the leader of Nova União.
Dedé has had an impressive career in both MMA and BJJ. He won six BJJ championships, earned a 7th degree coral belt from IBJJF, and even fought for the UFC welterweight belt at UFC 21! After four fights, he ended up with one win, one loss and two draws.
