Here’s the thing. There is a billion techniques in Jiu-Jitsu… Okay, maybe not a billion, but there are so many techniques that there’s no chance that you’ll be able to learn them all. And in particular, there’s no chance that you’ll ever be able to learn them all so proficiently that you’d be able to apply them equally well in sparring or in competition.
But should you still try to learn as many techniques as possible in BJJ? Or is focusing on a few moves more practical for your progress and success?
Nick “Chewy” Albin shares his opinion.
LEARNING A FEW VS. MANY MOVES IN BJJ
Chewy explains that, particularly for lower belts, it’s best that they learn a few techniques really well. Because, when you’re early in your Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu development, you could try and learn a big number of moves. But the thing is, you’ll get confused when it comes time to roll. And it will be difficult to develop a sound game plan.
So, you should focus on learning a few moves from every position (both in terms of attacks and defense). This will force you to really nail down the details and perfect your skills… So that, when your training partners and opponents counter the technique you’re trying to execute, you already know what your follow-up move will be.
This means that knowing how to do a couple of techniques really well also translates into chaining these techniques together. Which is incredibly important for your BJJ improvement.
