Ever had that feeling that you’re getting worse in Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu as time flies by? As in, even though you’re trying out new things and attempting techniques, it seems that your BJJ game is actively regressing?
Well, that’s actually what’s supposed to happen. You can’t get really good at one thing, before being really bad at it. Jocko Willink knows the feeling as well:
Just got done training with Doctor Luke here… We were talking about implementing new moves into your (BJJ) game. And this is something that happens in the business world too; people got to change the way they’re doing things.
Well, when you change the way you’re doing things, or you implement new things in your game, guess what’s going to happen? You’re going to get worse at first. You’re going to get less efficient.
Jocko emphasizes that it’ll take you time to figure out how to perform these new things properly. But you can get it done:
It’s going to take you time to figure out the nuances of the move or the procedure… And once you get that down, you’ll get better.
But any change starts with getting worse. So, keep that in mind, push through it, keep working, and you’ll get it done.
