Improve Your BJJ & Life: “Get To” vs. “Got To” Mindset

You don’t like warm-ups. We get it – you only do them because you have to (and because it makes you feel less stiff, but that’s beside the point). Plus, there are some drills that you really don’t enjoy doing, that you do just because you’ve got to… And honestly, you’d like most to just go straight for the rolls, right? If only you didn’t have to do all of this beforehand.
But here’s the thing: with this sort of a “I’ve got to” mindset, you won’t get far in Jiu-Jitsu. Nor will you get too far in life. So, it might be a good time to start changing this “got to” mindset with the “get to” one.

“GET TO” MINDSET IN BJJ AND LIFE

If you’re thinking about doing things because you’ve “got to” do them, you will rarely ever find any gratitude in doing them. For instance, if you always think how you’ve got to do the warm-ups, the drills… You’ll never appreciate what these warmups and drills are doing for you – making you less prone to injuries and better-skilled.
It’s the same thing in life. If you do the stuff with a daily attitude of “having to do it”, you’ll rarely feel grateful for the opportunity to do them. For the life you have a chance to be a part of.

It’s for these reasons that it’s important that you switch to the “I get to” mindset. It will improve not just your performance on the mats, but also your life.
Professor Ryan Young, from Kama Jiu-Jitsu, explains more on the video below:
