So you want to improve your BJJ as fast as possible, eh? Well, the most important thing you can do for your Jiu-Jitsu progress is, arguably, to harbor patience; as consistency and proper focus will bring the best athlete out of you.
With that said, there are things you can do right now to perform better on the mats immediately. Here are 5 tips to help you do just that.
IMPROVE YOUR BJJ IMMEDIATELY: 5 TIPS
Before anything else, ask yourself the following question: “Am I rushing for the submission?” If the answer is “yes”, then you need to learn to pace yourself and focus on obtaining control first, submission second.
You’ll have a much easier time (and will be giving up much less space) submitting your opponents when you’ve solidified the advantageous position you’re in. In effect, never forget that the degree of control you have over the opponent’s movement will dictate your submission success rate.
Secondly, you need to learn how to bridge. The bridge is one of those movements in Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu that you’ll be required to do almost all the time – in order to escape positions such as Side Control – so it might be a good idea to learn how to perform it properly.
The third tip is to hide your arms. When you find yourself in danger, it’s extremely important that you learn how to prevent your opponents from establishing a seriously advantageous position against you. Therefore, tuck in your arms whenever possible; this will prevent underhooks, Crossfaces, and similar.
Hip Escapes are vital, as you likely know by now. However, learning proper technique isn’t going to be enough – you’ll have to learn when to do it as well. In other words, you need to develop the intuition to immediately do a Hip Escape, as soon as the opponent gets past your knees, as this will prevent them from anchoring their weight onto you.
And finally, start using your legs together with your arms. They have to work in conjunction in order for you to perform some of the basic motions in BJJ; such as pulling and pushing. You also need to use them together to create strong connections for attacks.
