If you’re caught in the closed guard against a skilled opponent then you’re in serious trouble.
Give him time and you’ll find that he’s wrapped up your arms, broken your posture, and is getting closer and closer to tapping you out with some choke or armlock.
That’s why the closed guard is NOT a place for you to hang out. Instead you should immediately and determinedly start passing the guard.
The classic ‘stack pass’ was one of the first guard passes in jiu-jitsu and is STILL one of the best weapons to deploy against the closed guard.
In the video below legendary coach Fabio Gurgel (who is a 4 time world champion, trainer of more than 50 other world champions, and the author of The Pressure Passing System) takes you through the exact steps to use the stack pass vs closed guard.
His system of passing is based around forcing your opponent into a situation where he has has only a limited number of options, each one of which you can have a preprepared response ready for!
