So you want to build confidence on the mats (and maybe in life in general)… But how should you go about it?
Well, first of all, it’s important to understand that whenever you try something new, you’re not going to be great at it to begin with.
For example, if you want to learn a new technique, chances are that you won’t be able to hit it on the people who have the same belt rank as you do.
Not even Gordon Ryan is able to do that. However, he adapts:
You know, when I learn a new move, I’m not great at it… [But] I’m not terrible, either.
Like, I can’t hit a new move on the second best guy in the world, maybe on day one – but I can hit it on a blue belt, a purple belt, the brown belt… And then I work up to the best guy in the world.
So, over the course of you know, a month or two months, I take that new move and now I’m hitting it on the second best guy in the world.
And that, in fact, is how you build confidence. It’s by doing and achieving success bit by bit, as Gordon emphasizes:
It’s not just, like, false confidence where it’s like: “Yeah, I’m the fuc*ing best.” But it’s the guy in the bar who thinks he can fight who says: “Yeah, I’m the fuc*ing best”, but then he goes into a fight and he just gets tired in 30 seconds and gets beat up.
So, I think that true confidence is built from positive results over time, in the gym.
