Today there are almost as many BJJ Gi companies as there are excuses your friends give you for not coming and trying a class. As the sport continues to grow, so will this expanding market, particularly in the area of kid’s Gis. One company that is making a strong statement in this area is Submission Fight Company founded in 2010 and based in Northridge, California. Their new Sprout Gi is one of the lightest and softest Gis currently on the market designed specifically for youth.
Submission, it’s our ultimate goal in any fight. Sure a knockout feels good but a Submission makes the other guy quit, and trust me there is no better feeling than making your opponent quit while being fully conscious. We train countless hours a week and when it’s our time to go into any fight we have one goal in mind, Submission. It’s the name of our brand. It’s that moment where all your hard work comes into play, the moment your opponent lifts his hand and taps out, It is this moment that you suddenly get a rush of bliss throughout your body and mind. Live for this moment – Submission! —From Submission Fight Company’s Website
I had the opportunity to have a couple of killers from my academy, Leverage BJJ in Cortland, OH try out the new Sprout. Each of these future champions has almost two years of BJJ under their belt. They’ve each had experience with a few different Gis. This is what Corey and Zak had to share specifically regarding the Sprout.
I would like to confine the feedback to two key areas which encompass many of the standard elements consumers look to in BJJ Gis. First, I will examine what I will call “The Coolness Factor” and secondly we will look at “The Mom Factor”.
Coolness Factor: Let’s face it. “Coolness” is number one whether you 8 years old or 48 years old. “Coolness” is here defined as a sort of archetypal mix of fit, flair, and impact on your BJJ.
Both Corey and Zak gave the Sprout high marks from a “coolness” perspective. They both raved about the coloring and contrasting accents. Zak particularly was a huge fan of the Submission logo running down the arm of the jacket.
From an outsider’s perspective, I was particularly impressed with the almost tailored fit of the Gis. Having had my two girls train wearing different Gi brands and not being as satisfied with the overall fit of the Gi to the child’s body, this element really impressed me with the Sprout. They looked custom-made to Corey and Zak’s physiques.
Both boys shared with me that the fit and softness of the Gi definitely impacted their BJJ. Each shared that they felt very comfortable in the Gi and it made them want to train longer and Corey even mentioned that the lightness of the Gi made him feel faster.
The Mom Factor: I must first mention that this is not to discredit all of the Dad’s out there involved in their kid’s BJJ lives and maintenance as I’ve done more than my share of laundry. For this particular review, I received a lot of feedback from boy’s mothers.
Both mom’s were very happiness with the maintenance of the Gis. They each washed them on cold and air-dried them for the majority of the time. Corey’s mom let it dry for about 10 minutes in the dryer prior to letting it air-dry and both reported that the Gi was softer than ever with no shrinkage.
Each of the mothers also shared some important feedback which goes back to the “Coolness Factor”. Because each boy loved the fit and feel of the Sprout, they were genuinely more enthusiastic to train than normal which made them very happy.
The Sprout’s stats are as follow:
- – 350 GSM Single Weave Gi Top
- – Light 10oz twill pants
- – Cotton / Polyester blend
- – Black With Green Contrast Stitching
- – Pre-Shrunk
- – Embroidered designs
- – Heavily Reinforced Stress Points
- – Awesome Fit
- – IBJJF Approved
- – Free Gi Bag Included*
It is available in the black with green accent version for $109.95.
The white version has both yellow and green accents and sells for $99.95.
In conclusion, The Sprout is clearly representative of Submission Fight Company’s ‘never say die’ philosophy. The company is making a statement with this Gi and it is easily one of the most comfortable kids Gis on the market. It taps out the competition in “Coolness Factor” and passes effortlessly past Mom’s guard with it’s ease of maintenance the smiles that it put on my reviewer’s face. One might have a brief moment of ‘sticker shock” when they see the price points for the two models, but I assure you, the comfort and durability of The Sprout will quiet those thoughts as soon as you see this Gi.
