The Mount is the second-most dominant position you could get to in Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu. But it can also be extremely difficult to transition into. Namely, when you get to Side Control or Half Guard, your training partners will do everything they can, not just to escape – but also to prevent you from establishing Mount.
Here’s a simple (albeit not an easy) solution: go for double underhooks first. They’ll make your job a whole lot easier.
Professor John Danaher explains.
GET DOUBLE UNDERHOOKS & GET THE MOUNT
Why are double underhooks such an efficient solution? Professor Danaher explains that this is because your training partner needs the elbow-knee connection in order to stop you mounting them. They need to connect their elbow with their knee, so as to form a “barrier” between themselves and you.
Well, if you establish both underhooks – and particularly if you apply a heavy Crossface with the near shoulder – you’ll negate them this connection and you’ll have an easy time getting to Mount.
However, establishing double underhooks in and of themselves isn’t easy, especially from Side Control. That’s why Professor Danaher says that this is simpler to do from Half Guard instead, as you’re aligned with your training partner.
He explains the advantages of this setup in much more detail on the video below:
