There’s no going around it: if you want to succeed in anything, you have to step out of your comfort zone.
This means doing the things that you don’t want to do, because you understand that they’ll be extremely beneficial – and the same is true for Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu.
Brian Glick explains more on why you need to step out of your comfort zone:
Many of our most meaningful learning experiences come from times when we ARE overwhelmed and are thus required to go up to (or beyond) our current limits.
These moments can be physical – where our stability is challenged and we’re literally stretched to our maximum capacity – or they can be psychological, where we get to the edge of what we know or understand.
You have to appreciate and even strive for situations in which you don’t feel the “best”:
If you only spend time with what you know or can do, you won’t time you spend with what you don’t. On the mat this mean means fewer chances to discover something new and problem-solve in a different way.
In other words, it’s an opportunity for improvement:
So whenever you find yourself in a situation characterized by uncertainty, see it for what it is – an opportunity to uncover news ways to adapt and adjust.
