BJJ Advice: Forget About Progress – Enjoy The Process (For A Change)

Everyone who trains BJJ wants to get better at it… To keep making progress, to be better than they were the day before.
Unfortunately, skill improvement in Jiu-Jitsu isn’t always evident. And it doesn’t always happen as fast as you might want it to – which can lead to a lot of frustration.

When these moments happen, it’s important to remind yourself that progress isn’t the only thing you should be focusing on; but that the process is equally – if not more – vital.

Brian Glick explains why this is the case:

… Forget (even for the moment) about the PACE OF PROGRESS and focus on enjoying THE PROCESS ITSELF.

Instead of focusing on where we want to end up, we can appreciate the details of whatever we’re studying right now. That includes being grateful for wherever we’re starting from and the opportunity to learn and grow at all.

Any time you find yourself wishing things were moving faster, it’s a good cue to switch focus from the outcome you’re hoping for to the process you’re engaging in right now.

But what if you’re already enjoying the process but want to progress even more?
Then start using your legs more. Here’s some top-notch advice from John Danaher himself:

In every class I teach, THOSE WHO LEARN TO GRAPPLE PREDOMINANTLY WITH THEIR FEET, LEGS AND HIPS, QUICKLY OVERTAKE AND DOMINATE THOSE WHO GRAPPLE PREDOMINANTLY WITH THEIR HANDS, ARMS AND SHOULDERS.
