Are You Getting Good At The „Right Things“ In Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu?

Sure, you’re training hard and you want to get good at this Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu thing… But are you focused on the „right things“? Or on the stuff you’ll never use nor find any utility in?
Robert Degle explains that what the „right things“ are will depend on your goals:

What kind of grappler do you want to be? What kinds of tournaments do you want to win?

The time you have to acquire skills is limited: every session spent working on something is a session you didn’t spend working on another thing.
What this means is you have to be selective ideally based on a good idea of what kinds of skills you’re going to need to get where you want to go.

But how are you supposed to figure out what the right things are? You can do so by watching people who’ve achieved the goals you’re after… And breaking down what they do:

Analyze the techniques and tactics they used and attempt to turn them into skills you possess.

Of course, there’s also going to be individual exploration and innovation. But trying to reinvent the wheel is a sure fire way to making sure you get nothing done except discovering a few nifty gimmicks.
By all means look to innovate, but do it while also spending most of your time working from the foundation of knowledge successful people in our field have already set down for us.
